Welsh PAYE · employee category A
Payroll Tax Calculator
Estimate PAYE income tax, employee National Insurance, employer National Insurance, take-home pay and total employment cost from an annual salary.
The calculation uses the standard personal allowance and annualised thresholds. Salary-sacrifice pension contributions can be entered where a valid arrangement reduces both taxable and National Insurance pay.

Direct answer
What payroll taxes does an employer calculate?
Payroll normally deducts PAYE income tax and employee National Insurance from gross pay. The employer also pays employer National Insurance where earnings exceed the relevant threshold, subject to reliefs such as Employment Allowance where the business qualifies.
The amount reaching the employee is gross cash pay less PAYE, employee National Insurance and any other payroll deductions. Employer National Insurance is an additional business cost rather than a deduction from the employee’s net pay.

How the payroll tax estimate is built
The calculator keeps employee deductions and employer cost separate so neither is hidden inside a single percentage.
Establish cash pay
A valid salary-sacrifice amount is deducted from contractual salary to establish taxable and National Insurance pay.
Calculate PAYE
The standard personal allowance, taper and Welsh basic, higher and additional rates are applied annually.
Calculate employee NI
Category A contributions use the primary threshold, upper earnings limit and main and upper rates.
Calculate employer cost
Employer NI is added to contractual remuneration; the pension funded by sacrifice remains part of employer cost.
| Item | Rate or threshold |
|---|---|
| Standard personal allowance | £12,570 |
| Employee NI primary threshold | £12,570 |
| Employee NI upper earnings limit | £50,270 |
| Employee NI main / upper rates | 8% / 2% |
| Employer NI secondary threshold / rate | £5,000 / 15% |

Payslip differences
Tax codes and pay periods affect live payroll
An employee’s code can include earlier pay, benefits, underpaid tax or transferred allowance. Irregular bonuses and directors’ National Insurance also need pay-period rules that an annual salary estimate cannot reproduce.

Common questions
Payroll tax calculator questions
Is employer National Insurance deducted from salary?
No. Employee National Insurance is deducted from pay, while employer National Insurance is normally an additional cost paid by the employer.
Why does my payslip differ from the annual estimate?
PAYE uses the employee’s tax code and may be cumulative. National Insurance usually uses earnings in each pay period, so irregular pay and rounding can change the result.
Does salary sacrifice always reduce tax and National Insurance?
No. The arrangement must be valid and some benefits are valued under optional-remuneration rules. The employee also gives up cash salary, which can affect borrowing, statutory payments and workplace benefits.
Does this calculator cover Scottish taxpayers?
No. The PAYE calculation uses Welsh rates, which currently follow the main UK non-savings rates. Scottish income-tax bands and rates differ.
